Special Guest - Music Manager- James Foster -

We are delighted to introduce a new avenue for the zine and an integral part of the arts, especially for the UK.

Our music industry is iconic but is also another avenue that is not promoted enough in schools. It is only when students leave school do they find that this is the path they have been looking for, be that as musicians, roadies, or producers.

This is why we wanted to shed some light on this area for anyone wanting to follow their dream but didn’t know where to start. Here you will hear how other people found their path in the music industry.

We will be starting with Music Manager James Foster a good friend and fellow creative whose journey you can read about here…

1 – What lead you to, or what was your journey to this path in the creative industries?

I’m very dyslexic so naturally gravitated toward a more creative-driven career. I never expected to end up in music as I studied the arts at university and somewhat stumbled into music after designing the artwork/assets for a record label at art college.

2 –  Do you think the creative industry is relevant, and explain why?

100%, the creative industry encompasses a wide range of fields such as art, music, film, television, design, advertising, and more - we couldn’t live without it. These industries contribute significantly to the global economy, generating jobs and revenue. But their relevance goes beyond just economic impact.

The creative industry is essential because it drives innovation and influences culture. Creative professionals bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the table, pushing boundaries and challenging norms. They create products and experiences that enrich our lives and shape our society. The creative industry plays a vital role in preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage. Art, music, literature, and other forms of creative expression help us understand our past, present, and future. Its contributions to the economy, innovation, and culture make it an essential part of our society.

3 – If you could own one piece of artwork no matter the cost, what would it be and why?

It would be a limited edition Die Hard alternative movie poster made by Laurent Durieux sold exclusively via Mondo. I’m an avid Movie Poster collector and this is still one of the best alternative movie posters I’ve ever seen. There are certainly way more valuable pieces that I would love to have, anything by KAWS for example would be amazing but they would just be cool things to have. I actually want the Die Hard poster.

4 – What would your advice be to someone wanting to venture into the creative industries today?

Respect everyone around you no matter how big or small you think they might be. Avoid professional blow-ups and pick your battles. Many of your peers and competitors won’t follow these basic rules but they are vital. As big as the industry is there are actually only a few successful enough to be able to survive off it as a career and provide for yourself / your family.

As you progress in your career you’ll find yourself running into the same people again and again. If you stick it out long enough your friends from back in the day will hopefully be in positions of power that you can utilise to help yourself and your clients.

5- If you could go back 10-20 years what would you tell your younger self?

If you’re unhappy with something;  get out, implement change (force it if needed) and be more selfish towards your own needs. I wasted too much time thinking about other people rather than myself.

6 – In 5 - 10 years’ time what do you hope to have done or not done within your career?

To work with household names that resonate further in society rather than just within my own niche.
